Carens changing with the times

  • ROAD TEST – KIA CARENS 1.7 CRDi 2

TIMES and designs change, and so has a model from the expanding Kia stable that’s slipped under the radar over the past few years.

The Carens seven-seater has been an ever-present on the compact MPV scene since its debut back in 1999.

Over its previous two generations it has appeared, well, a competent but ordinary looking MPV. Even the expression ‘people carrier’ hints at a boxy shape devoid of any style.

And here lies the Kia newcomer’s trump card in the shape of a car that drivers may want to own because it looks good rather than purely due to its practicality.

KiCarens4NCarens actually completes the regeneration of Kia’s model line-up under the direction of design chief Peter Schreyer, who has updated every vehicle in the Korean brand’s range.

What you get with the Carens is a low slung offering that’s shorter, narrower and lower than its predecessor.

Yet thanks to a 50mm increase in wheelbase and lower seat positioning it offers better than adequate head, leg and shoulder room in all three rows of seats.

That said, use all seven seats and there’s precious little room left for luggage.

Inside the cabin you also get a cooled glovebox, second row underfloor storage, centre console box, flip-up seatback tables and eight cup holders.

KiCarens2NBut what really stands out about the Carens is the quality of its fittings and, more importantly, its engineering.

Even with a full complement aboard it is a smooth, well balanced and enjoyable car to drive.

Of the three engines available the 1.7-litre CRDi diesel in the tested version is both strong and frugal.

The six-speed manual transmission is slick and offers gearchange prompts to help conserve fuel, in my case an average 53mpg compared to the official Combined figure of 60.1mpg.

Each of the 1, 2 and 3 badged trim grades come with plenty of kit, including stuff like LED daytime running lamps, air-con, cruise control and CD system with Bluetooth – plus Kia’s seven-year transferable warranty.
