Volkswagen XL Sport one in a million

  • by Mike Torpey
  • June 15, 2015

Talk about having that million dollar look – the stunning XL Sport was actually the 200 millionth car to be produced by the Volkswagen group.

And the sports car concept will be one of four red-hot newcomers from the German brand aiming to wow the crowds at the Goodwood Festival of Speed later this month.

All four – the Sport Coupe GTE Concept, the XL Sport, Golf R400 and the 2015 Polo R WRC rally car – will be on show in the UK for the first time.

The XL Sport is actually developed from the Volkswagen XL1, claimed to be the world’s most energy efficient production car, and is powered by a Ducati Superleggera engine producing 200PS and giving the supercar a top speed of 168mph.

The Sport Coupe GTE Concept made its international debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March and marks the start of a new design era for Volkswagen.

Under the bonnet is a plug-in hybrid drive, combining a TSI petrol engine with two electric motors.

Also on show will be the Golf R 400, based on the standard Golf R hatchback but raising the stakes with 400PS and 450Nm of torque plus the looks to match.

Completing the quartet is the Polo R WRC which has seen action in the World Rally Championship and currently leads the manufacturer and driver championships.

The car’s appearance at Goodwood comes just a couple of weeks after the manufacturer secured a 1-2-3 podium finish at the Rally of Portugal.

Tickets are still up for grabs for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, with info from the festival website at https://ticketing.goodwood.com.
